Defendant: Sabab Islam

On April 18, 2022, 20-year-old Sabab Islam pleaded guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter and Aggravated Robbery for his connection to a string of events that occurred on January 24, 2021. He also pleaded guilty for Assaulting a Peace Officer for an incident that occurred on April 9, 2022.

On January 24, 2021, Islam and another individual held a man and woman at gunpoint outside of their hotel room at a Budget Inn on Westerville Road. The suspects stole the man's cellphone and wallet, which contained the woman's debit card.

Later that day, 14-year-old Davyion Jones was confronted by a group of individuals in a stolen Nissan SUV at the 5300 block of Hazelwood Road. One of the individuals in the SUV shot Jones; Jones was rushed to Riverside Hospital where he later died.
After Jones was shot, the vehicle sped from the scene and crashed shortly thereafter. The occupants then fled on foot. Sixteen days later, Aboubacar Toure and Sabab Islam were arrested in Detroit, Michigan by U.S. Marshals for their connection to the homicide.

Aboubacar Toure has been indicted for the murder of Jones and is currently in custody awaiting trial. On April 19, 2022, Alhaj Sankoh was also indicted for Aggravated Murder for the same incident and is in custody.
On April 9, 2022, Columbus Police Officer Justin Jones responded to a single-vehicle accident on I-670 at Grandview Avenue just before 4:30am. Officer Jones, a 16-year law enforcement veteran, immediately began conducting a safety assessment of the scene. Officer Jones made contact with the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Sabab Islam, and observed him exhibiting extremely erratic behavior.

After speaking with Islam, Officer Jones decided to have him sit in the police cruiser for safety reasons. As they were walking back to the cruiser, Islam assaulted Officer Jones by punching him in the face several times and attempting to gauge the officer’s eye. Officer Jones was able to subdue Islam until backup officers arrived. Officer Jones was taken to Grant Medical Center for treatment and Islam was taken into custody.
Islam was sentenced to a term of 10 to 15 years at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction for his connection to the homicide and robbery from January 24, 2021. He was also given an additional consecutive sentence of 18 months for assaulting Officer Jones, which is the maximum possible sentence for assaulting a police officer under Ohio law. His overall sentence is 11.5 years to 16.5 years in prison.
