Man Sentenced to Life in Prison after Pleading Guilty to Murder
Published on October 29, 2026
COLUMBUS, Ohio—On September 19, 2026, James Hill, 77, pleaded guilty to murder and cruelty to animals stemming from a murder-suicide attempt that arose from a blackmail scheme in November 2025.
Yesterday, the court sentenced Hill to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years.
Case Background
Hill and a woman named "Lucy" met on a dating site, where he stated they messaged for a week prior to the incident. During those conversations, Hill sent Lucy a nude photograph of himself. On the morning of the incident, Lucy demanded $15,000, threatening to release the nude photos if he did not pay. Unable to pay the blackmail, Hill stated he decided the only way out of the situation was to kill himself and his wife, Mary Hill.
On November 9, 2025, at approximately 2:00 PM, Hill retrieved a knife from his kitchen and stabbed Mary once in the center of her chest. Hill then walked into the living room and attempted to stab his dog. The dog was struck but managed to run away; the animal was later euthanized due to the severity of its injuries. Following the attacks, Hill logged onto his computer, deleted pictures and documents, and called 911 before sitting on his living room couch and stabbing himself.
At approximately 2:30 PM, officers responded to a call requesting police and medics to Fishinger Road in Upper Arlington. Upon arrival, they found an unresponsive female in the front room of the residence. The woman was identified as Mary Hill, the wife of James Hill, and was pronounced dead at the scene. James Hill was found with a self-inflicted stab wound to his chest. When confronted, Hill surrendered the knife, and police administered first aid before transporting him to Riverside Methodist Hospital, where he was questioned by detectives.
