The Civil Division acts as the legal advisor to all 176 of the Franklin county officials, boards, commissions, townships and agencies. The Civil Division includes critical divisions like the Nuisance Abatement Unit, the Labor and Employment Unit , Business, Contracts and Zoning Unit, and the Delinquent Tax and Asset Collection Unit This Division also ensures transparency with the community by processing all public record requests.
Public Records
A public record can be a document, photograph, email, or electronic file. The record must be created, received, or possessed by the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office and show the works, policies, or decisions of this office.
The record must exist at the time a request is made. The law also states that records must be provided in a reasonable amount of time. For example, a single document may be turned over quickly, while a request for five years’ worth of records may take much longer.
Ohio and federal law provide for mandatory and discretionary exemptions to the release of records kept by the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office.
The best way to submit a records request to our office is to email prosecutor@franklincountyohio.gov with specific details or fill out this form(PDF, 220KB). The Ohio Supreme Court says you must describe the records you want with reasonable clarity and specificity. A request is considered ambiguous if it does not clearly identify the records you are requesting.

The Nuisance Abatement Unit strategically partners with police and community agencies to reduce crime hotspots and improve neighborhood safety by addressing property neglect. This work includes filing civil complaints to either force bad actors and property owners to make improvements to stop criminal activity or to shut down a business for being a public nuisance.
