Prosecuting Attorney Interns

The goal of the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office Internship Program is to develop and train students by providing a comprehensive understanding of the large legal scope of work that the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office does. From the Criminal Division, Civil Division, and the Conviction Integrity Unit, our internship program provides legal work experience needed to understand the job of a prosecutor. These experiences include:

  • Assisting prosecutors with the duties and functions the office.
  • Gaining invaluable courtroom and legal research experience.
  • Engaging on the record with criminal and civil proceedings under the direction of an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney.
  • Representing the State of Ohio in felony arraignments and other hearings with a Legal Intern Certification.
  • Engaging with law enforcement, support staff, and the community.
  • Participating in educational experiences with professionals through lunch and learns.

What to Expect on a Daily Basis

This internship will provide students with practical experience in the field of criminal, civil, and appeals law. Students will assist prosecutors with:

  • Charging decisions
  • Docket and trial preparation
  • Motion drafting
  • Research
  • Witness interviews
  • Field research
  • Discovery
  • Labor and Employment

Internship Requirements

Students who have completed their first year of law school are able to apply for the program. This is a paid internship program with interns making $18 per hour. Interns are able to progress from their 1L to 3L year with the Franklin County Prosecutor’s and gain juvenile docket experience in their 3L year.

Internship Programs

Summer Internship Program

Interns are required to work 40 hours a week, with exceptions. They must submit Certificate of Educational Requirements upon their first year completion to become a certified legal intern.

Autumn and Winter Internship Program

Interns are required to work 20 hours a week, with exceptions. They must submit Certificate of Educational Requirements upon their first year completion to become a certified legal intern.

To Apply

Through Ohio State Moritz College of Law and Capital Law School: Applicants can apply for internships by providing resumes and participating in the Law On-Campus Interviews during the winter.

Through Application and Email: Applicants are able to send their resume, cover letter, and writing sample to the Franklin County Human Resource email: prat-hr@franklincountyohio.gov. The subject should include your name, the internship division you wish to apply, and the semester you wish to apply.

Applicants should turn in all materials for the summer internship program by March 1st. Autumn and Winter applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
