Press Releases

Today, a Franklin County Grand Jury completed its review of the October 8, 2025, fatal shooting of Dominique Byrdsong by on-duty Grove City Police Officers. The Grand Jury voted not to issue an indictment. Therefore, no charges have been filed with the Clerk of Courts related to this incident.

Background

In the early evening of Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the owner of the home at 3810 Louise Court in Grove City arrived at his residence. At that time, the home was unoccupied due to ongoing renovations. When he arrived, the owner observed a large black truck, unfamiliar to him, parked in his driveway. Upon entering the residence, the owner had a brief conversation with an unknown male, later identified as Dominique Byrdsong, who was inside the residence gathering belongings. The owner observed a handgun tucked into Byrdsong’s waistband so he promptly left the residence and called police.

Officers from the Grove City Police Department arrived and set up containment around 3810 Louise Court. Officers attempted to get Byrdsong to exit the residence by giving commands on the public address system. Byrdsong refused to surrender to officers, but did briefly come out of the residence multiple times. After several hours, police deployed gas into the residence. At that time, Byrdsong ran from the rear of the residence, over fences and through other yards until he reached the south side of a home on Sheldon Place when he tripped and fell.

As pursuing Grove City Police officers approached, Byrdsong discharged a handgun multiple times in the direction of the officers, striking one officer. Officers returned fire, striking Byrdsong. Byrdsong died as a result of his injuries.

Office Policy on Officer-Involved Fatalities

Since 1980, the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office has maintained a policy of presenting all cases involving fatal use of force by on-duty law enforcement officers to a Grand Jury. This longstanding practice ensures that an independent panel of citizens evaluates the circumstances surrounding these critical incidents.
