A Franklin County grand jury has indicted eight people accused of helping a Columbus man evade capture after a May 28 shooting that injured two Mifflin Township police officers.
Jennifer Dale, 25, Namina Goler, 20, Isaiah Ingle, 23, Elijah Robinson, 22, Grace Mellon, 23, Kaitlyn Mellon, 25, and Au’nusti Solomon, 21, were indicted today on one felony count each of obstructing justice.
Nathan Brown, 22, was also indicted on a count of obstructing justice, as well as one count each of unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance with a 6-year automatic firearm specification and unlawful transaction in weapons with a 1-year firearm specification.
Case Background
At around 6:45 p.m. May 28, Mifflin Township police pulled over a vehicle near the intersection of Mecca Drive and Perdue Avenue after they witnessed the car starting and stopping randomly in the middle of the street. When they inquired about the smell of marijuana in the car, passenger Daveonte Dixon, 22, opened the door and ran.
As the officers chased him, Dixon allegedly turned and opened fire, striking and seriously injuring both officers.
Dixon evaded police until May 30, when he was captured following a SWAT standoff at a home on Thelma Drive in Obetz. During the standoff, Dixon apparently shot himself in the face and is receiving treatment at a local hospital for serious injuries. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office obtained warrants for charges of Felonious Assault and Attempted Murder.
During a subsequent investigation, sheriff’s detectives determined that several people helped harbor, conceal and assist Dixon. On June 18, they made several arrests on charges of obstructing justice.
Both officers were hospitalized after the shooting, one in critical condition with serious injuries to his face and upper body. He was released from the hospital on June 23, after nearly a month of treatment. The other officer sustained serious injuries to his right arm and back and was released from the hospital the day after the shooting.
“We’re grateful to hear that both officers are now home recovering from their injuries,” Prosecutor Shayla D. Favor said. “Their resilience over the past month is a powerful reminder of the strength and dedication within our law enforcement community — and we continue to keep them and their families in our thoughts as they focus on healing.”
