Former Columbus Police Officer Adam Coy Sentenced for the 2020 Murder of Andre Hill

Defendant: Adam Coy
Former Columbus Division of Police Officer Adam Coy was sentenced today to life in prison for fatally shooting Andre Hill in December 2020.
In November 2024, Coy, 48, was found guilty of murder, felonious assault, and reckless homicide. Today, a judge imposed the mandatory sentence for murder, life in prison with eligibility for parole after 15 years.
“Today’s sentencing is a solemn step toward accountability in the death of Andre Hill, and toward strengthening the systems meant to serve and protect us all,” said Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Shayla D. Favor. “While we recognize and honor the challenges and risks that come with the job of an officer, we must also hold this truth: with that power comes an even greater responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of every person. When that power is gravely misused, accountability is not an option. It is essential.”
“I am glad that we are finally seeing some closure, said Andre Hill’s sister,” Dr. Shawna Barnett. “The sentencing is not going to bring my brother back. True justice would have him here. But I’m happy that we’ve come to this conclusion."
Background
On Dec. 22, 2020, Officer Coy responded to a non-emergency call from a resident on Oberlin Drive regarding an unfamiliar SUV. Upon arrival, he briefly spoke with Andre Hill, the occupant of the vehicle.
Moments later, Hill left the vehicle and entered the garage. Coy observed Hill and walked toward the garage to talk with him. As Hill emerged from the garage, Coy fired his weapon, striking Hill four times.
Though Coy testified in court that he believed Hill was carrying a weapon, police confirmed Hill was unarmed when he was shot. Hill, 47, died of his injuries at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
“As we move forward, I remain grateful for the tireless efforts of our prosecution team, for the leadership and advocacy of Chief Elaine Bryant and FOP President Brian Steel, and for the dedication of Andre Hill’s family, whose strength in grief is profound,” said Prosecutor Favor.
