Position Summary
The Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney of the Special Victims Unit (SVU) is responsible for helping the Director of SVU oversee the prosecution of a wide array of violent offenses, including sexual assaults of both adult and child victims, the most serious domestic violence and strangulation offenses, murder of children and intimate partners, child endangering, child pornography, and human trafficking. This role requires a legal professional with extensive experience in criminal prosecution, strategic case development, grand jury procedures, victim-less prosecution, and victim-focused prosecution. The Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney will help supervise a team of twelve Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys and a Litigation & Intelligence Analyst, with a focus on community safety and seeking justice for the most vulnerable victims of violent crime.
All of the assigned cases will involve indictments for the most serious cases handled by trial staff. The Senior’s assigned cases will consist almost entirely of homicides and felonies of violence of the first and second degree. The Senior APA will be expected to mentor and train trial staff attorneys as co-counsel on most cases assigned.
