Defendant: Sheila Marie Hutchins

Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said, “This babysitter violated her duty of care to the children she was babysitting by possessing fentanyl in her residence while having children present in her home.”  Prosecutor Ron O’Brien announced that the Franklin County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against Sheila Marie Hutchins, age 60, for one count of Involuntary Manslaughter (F-1) and one count of Endangering Children (F-3).  On July 10th, 2017, Hutchins was babysitting 5 children (ages 13, 13, 12, 10, and 7) in her home located on Lakeside Street South on the east side of Columbus.  She left the home to run errands and took the youngest child with her, leaving the four remaining children at her residence.  “While she was gone, the 12 year old obtained what he believed to be heroin from on top of the refrigerator, ingested some, and then went upstairs because he was tired,” O’Brien stated.  When Hutchins returned home, she was told that the 12 year old was unresponsive and that foam was on the boy’s face.  Medics were called and they transported the child to Children’s Hospital.  The boy died two days later.  Arraignment for Hutchins should be set for later in the week.
