Guilty Verdict In Death of Melly Smith

Defendant: Amir Elkhabiry

A jury found Amir Elkhabiry Guilty of Aggravated Murder with a firearm specification on March 17, 2022 following a four day jury trial. The Court convicted Mr. Elkhabiry of being a repeat violent offender and Having A Weapon while Under a Disability. Sentencing is set for May 24, 2022 and he faces a minimum of 29 years to life and a maximum term of Life without Parole.

The basis for this charge relates to the following facts: Mr. Elkhabiry shot and killed Melly Mel Smith in February, 2021 while on post-release control for Aggravated Robbery. Within ten minutes of the first 911 call, the Columbus Police Department located Mr. Elkhabiry hiding in his girlfriend’s trunk holding the murder weapon less than 100 yards from the scene.
