Defendant: Suney Coleman

A Columbus woman who shot one man, threatened to shoot another and fired shots at two police officers was  sentenced Monday for the crimes.

Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Andy Miller sentenced Suney Coleman, 25, to 30 to 33 years in prison for one count of robbery, one count of felonious assault and two counts of felonious assault of a police officer.

On Nov. 8, 2020, Coleman shot a man in his upper torso as he sat in his car at Deshler Park, just a few blocks south of East Livingston Avenue on the city’s southeast side. The victim drove himself to an urgent care on Alum Creek Drive. He was later transported to the hospital in critical condition but survived.

A week and a half later, on Nov. 19, 2020, Coleman brandished a gun while demanding money from a man parked at a Walgreens. The man convinced Coleman he could get money from an ATM inside the store. When the victim entered the store, he told employees what was going on, and they called the police. The police arrived a few minutes later and began looking for Coleman, whom they found moments later crouched next to a nearby McDonald’s dumpster. Coleman opened fire on two officers, shooting until her ammunition ran out. Neither officer was injured. She was arrested that night and taken into custody.

Coleman plead guilty to the charges in August. Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Leigh Bayer handled the sentencing case
