Defendant: Kyle Lucas

On June 7, Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Julie Lynch sentenced Kyle Lucas, 33, to 14 to 18 years in prison after convicting Lucas on two counts — felonious assault with a three-year firearm specification and a repeat violent offender specification and having a weapon under disability.

On October 13, 2022, Lucas used a gun to threaten and assault his girlfriend’s father (whom we are choosing not to name) inside the father’s home. Lucas first entered the father’s bedroom and verbally threatened him. When Lucas left the room, the father called 911. Lucas came back into the room a second time and physically assaulted the father with his gun. Lucas left the room again, at which point the father got his own gun. When Lucas returned to the room a third time with the gun still in his hand, the father shot Lucas. Lucas was able to run down the stairs and leave the house.

After checking local hospitals for a gunshot victim, officers found Lucas in critical condition at Grant Medical Center.

The girlfriend’s father recorded parts of the interaction, including the assault and the shooting, on his cell phone camera. The audio from the recording helped Columbus Division of Police Detectives arrest and charge Lucas.

After the one-day bench trial, Judge Lynch immediately rendered a verdict, finding the girlfriend’s father to be credible. After parties requested to move immediately into sentencing, and Judge Lynch sentenced Lucas to:

  • • 8 to 12 years for felonious assault
  • • 3 years for the firearm specification
  • • 3 years for the repeat violent offender specification
  • • 12 months for having a weapon under disability (to run concurrent to felonious assault count)
Leigh Bayer, assistant prosecuting attorney for the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office, prosecuted the case against Lucas.
