Defendant: Tyrell Shute

A Franklin County grand jury Friday returned a five-count indictment against Tyrell Shute, 24, of Columbus, on charges relating to the death of a 4-year-old boy in the Franklinton area.

On July 22, Shute was driving a stolen Kia Soul when Columbus Police attempted to pull him over on  Greenfield Drive near Southpark Apartments. Shute fled the traffic stop and drove over a curb onto a grassy area in the 700 block of Canonby Place. The vehicle struck the boy as he was playing with his family on the grass lawn outside the apartment complex. Shute fled the area on foot but was caught and arrested early Sunday morning.

Columbus Police rushed the child to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Shute was indicted on one count of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, two counts of fleeing the police, one count of receiving stolen property, and one count of leaving the scene of an accident. All are felonies and could lead to a total potential imprisonment of more than 15 years if he is convicted of all charges.

The grand jury determines if a crime has been committed and whether there is probable cause to believe that the defendant committed the crime.
