Defendant: Antwan Lindsey
A Franklin County grand jury voted Friday not to indict the officers involved in the July 2023 shooting death of Antwan Lindsey.
On July 8, 2023, a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy was working special duty at a Walgreens at James Road and Livingston Avenue on Columbus’ East Side when he was advised of an individual engaged in threatening behavior at a nearby apartment building. Investigators concluded that as the deputy drove his cruiser in front of the building, he was fired upon from the doorway by a suspect later identified as Lindsey.
Additional officers from both the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbus Division of Police responded. Officers entered the apartment building, where a standoff ensued. Investigators determined Lindsey had failed to comply with repeated demands to put his hands up and surrender. Officers heard what they believed to be gunfire and shot Lindsey. A firearm was recovered from the scene, and ballistics evidence concluded that it matched the shell casings of bullets fired at the officers.
Lindsey was hit multiple times and died from his wounds that evening.
A grand jury only decides whether or not a crime has been committed. In this case, the grand jury also looked at whether any degree of unlawful criminal homicide occurred.
