Defendant: Tyrell Shute
The Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced that Tyrell Shute, 25, of Columbus, was sentenced today to a prison term of 14 to 19-½ years following his plea to involuntary manslaughter, failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, and receiving stolen property.
In addition to imposing the prison sentence, Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Andy Miller imposed a 15-year driver's license suspension.
On July 22, 2023, Shute was fleeing from police while driving a stolen Kia Soul. As the officers discontinued the pursuit, Shute continued to operate the vehicle recklessly, including driving at a high rate of speed through the green space in the Canonby Place Apartments. While driving through the green space, Shute struck and killed Yonis Said, a 4-year-old boy.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Michael Shaw and Lauren Coriell prosecuted the case.
The Franklin County Prosecutors Office would like to thank the Columbus Division of Police for their above-and-beyond efforts in this case.
