Defendant: Shannon Gaines
Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Sheryl Munson on Thursday sentenced Shannon Gaines, 50, of Hilliard, to at least 12 years in prison after Gaines pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and two counts of aggravated vehicular assault. Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Donald Miller and Michael Shaw prosecuted the case for the prosecutor’s office.
On Dec. 2, 2021, while driving on Roberts Road between Walcutt Road and International Street, Gaines drove left of center into an incoming vehicle. One of the people in the car, Carla Mavis, died of blunt force trauma. Two others in the car, Marie Selm and Corinne Selm, were treated for fractures. Investigators determined Gaines had a .156 blood alcohol content at the time of the crash.
A surviving victim, the widower of Carla Mavis, and four other family members and friends spoke in court. Judge Munson sentenced Gaines to 12 to 15 years in prison, all mandatory time. Gaines was also given a lifetime drivers license suspension.
