Defendant: Jaquan Curry
A Columbus man who admitted to shooting and killing a Georgia man during a fight outside a Waffle House will spend the next two decades in prison.
Jaquan Curry, 21, pleaded guilty today to felony counts of involuntary manslaughter with a three-year firearm specification, amended from the original murder charge; felonious assault; and tampering with evidence.
A Franklin County judge sentenced Curry to a total of 23 to 28.5 years in prison.
Case Background
At about 2:30 a.m. on April 29, 2024, Columbus police were dispatched to the 1700 block of North High Street on a report of shots fired during a fight outside a Waffle House near The Ohio State University campus.
When they arrived, they found Ronald Diggs, 38, an entertainer visiting from Georgia, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Diggs was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead just after 3 a.m.
A warrant was issued for Jaquan Curry’s arrest the same day, but he evaded capture until Sept. 5, 2024, when he was arrested in a Canal Winchester apartment complex by the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team. Curry was later held in Franklin County Jail on a $1 million bond.
