Defendant: Shatwan Leander McCarrel
Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said, “This registered sex offender has a conviction from 2012 for having sex with a different minor.” Prosecutor Ron O’Brien announced that Shatwan Leander McCarrel, age 22, has been indicted by the Franklin County Grand Jury for two counts of Unlawful Sexual Conduct With A Minor (F-2), and for one count of Breaking and Entering (F-5), for a total of three counts. The victim’s father found concerning messages that the 13 year old had posted on a social media website, which led him to confront his daughter. On September 4th, 2016 it is alleged that McCarrel broke into a vacant house, where he then had sexual relations with the 13 year old girl. “Because of McCarrel’s prior conviction in 2012 for having sex with a minor, the counts in this indictment were able to be enhanced to the F-2 level. From that 2012 conviction, McCarrel was also classified as a Tier II Sex Offender, which requires him to register every 180 days for 25 years,” O’Brien said. Arraignment for McCarrel is set for next Monday, September 19th at 1:30 pm in courtroom 2B at 345 S. High Street in downtown Columbus.
